Stress Management

Stress is defined as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demands placed on them’.  These pressures may come from many different sources, for example, any sort of loss, bereavement, divorce, son/daughter leaving home, long-term illness, moving house, new job, demanding job, family commitments, etc.  While a certain amount of stress is required for us to be effective people and to fulfil our daily routines, too much stress over a prolonged period of time could weaken our immune system and could lead to health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and other serious illness and could also lead to anxiety and depression.

Symptoms of stress may include:

  • Increased irritabilitycouple
  • Heightened sensitivity to criticism
  • Signs of tension, i.e. nail biting
  • Insomnia
  • Increased drinking, smoking, eating
  • Loss of concentration.
